According to tradition, it was the Etruscan king of Chiusi, Porsenna, to build the first structures to promote the use of thermal waters of San Casciano dei Bagni, that the Romans knew as Clusinii sources. In Roman times, the territory of San Casciano was close to the route of the Via Cassia, one of the major roads of the period: this fact favoured the presence in the spa of many famous personalities, especially coming from the Imperial court in Rome. San Casciano dei Bagni knew another golden age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the presence of important Italian and European representatives of the nobility had the effect of enriching the town of extremely valuable buildings. Today, the small spa of San Casciano can offer a qualified therapeutic activity (massages, inhalations, mud-therapy using natural muds). A suggestion for all the tourists is to visit other three places near San Casciano: the castle of Fighine, the small town of Palazzone (known for good “Chianti Putto” wine) and the hamlet of Celle sul Rigo, where it is still visible an imposing thirteenth-century tower. Moreover it is strongly recommended to taste the typical and tasty local food.
